At nine we hit the Route 66 and town history museum in Elk City. It was a group of buildings laid out like a town. There was the Route 66 part of the story, but also history of the area and a rodeo museum. Quite a nice way to start the day.
Back on the bikes we again crossed and recrossed Route 40, riding the roads right to the side. Nice riding without the traffic and trucks. Through more wind farms and it was another strength draining day fighting against the winds.
We hit the Devils Rope Museum, which is a tribute to the history of barbed wire, from the ranches to the trenches of war. Very interesting place.
We're getting to the part of the country where you're not finding restaurants and gas stations every few miles. It took us awhile to find a place to eat lunch, but the 'Grill' in Groom TX hit the spot.
We were thinking of putting in some more miles and heading past Amarillo since we were looking at a long day tomorrow. By the time we got to town, we knew we had to stop. Since we're planning on taking a break near the Grand Canyon we've got some wiggle room, so I've redone the plan for the next few days, cutting down the miles to more manageable bites.
I was heating up by the time we got here since I still had my heavier base layers on. It's over 85 and the first thing done once the bike was unpacked and the beer bought was to take a shower. We ran across the 4 lane road and down a couple of blocks to a great Asian restaurant serving Thai, Lao and Vietnamese. I had a wonderful beef Pho.
Heading off to Moriarty NM tomorrow.....
